How To Help Your Child With Comprehension:

1. Visualize the story in your mind as you read.

2. Stop and think about what you are reading.

3. Ask questions to clarify what you are reading.

4. Retell the story to a family member.

5. Make predictions about what will happen and check your predictions.

6. Use your background knowledge about a topic.

7. Use context clues to help you understand the story.

 

How To Help Your Child With Vocabulary:

1. Use a dictionary to find the meaning of the word.

2. Replace the unknown word with a synonym.

3. Use context clues to help understand the word.

4. Read the words before and after the challenging vocabulary word to try to figure out the meaning.

5. Read more to gain exposure to new words.

 

How To Help Your Child Decode Challenging Words:

1. Look at the picture and think of words that make sense.

2. Say the beginning sounds and think of words with the same sound that make sense.

3. Read the word in a sentence and see if it makes sense.

4. Try "tapping it out". (Wilson)

5. Read the word in a sentence and see if it makes sense.

6. Skip over the word and read on. Go back to see if you can figure it out based on the context of the sentence.

7. Always ask yourself.... Does this make sense?
