Social Studies

In Social Studies we utilize many different resources to implement our curriculum.  We use the McGraw Hill Series, Scholastic News Pamphlets, Putnam Boces and whole class read-alouds.  Our four units are: Active Citizenship, Rural, Urban and Suburban Communities, Geography of Communities and Change and Interdependence.  The children will learn:

How citizens are responsible to the community.

Why citizens should vote.

How citizens show patriotism towards their country.

Why citizens pay taxes.

That rural, urban, and suburban communities have similarities and differences.

Rural, urban, and suburban communities have distinct characteristics.

How to recognize continents, oceans, landforms, and bodies of water.

How to use map skills.

How geography influences the lifestyles of different communities.

Students will understand that communities have changed and will continue to change over time.

Communities today are interdependent.
