Writer's Workshop

Writer’s Workshop: The structure of Writer’s Workshop mirrors Independent Reading. This is the time where we try out all of the strategies we learned during Shared Writing, Phonics, and Word Work. Similar to the Reading Workshop, the children will have the opportunity to write independently within a predictable, structured routine. The children will gain ownership and confidence in their writing abilities as they keep their work in their own writing folder. Each month or so, we will focus on a different Unit of Study. Examples may include, personal narratives, response to literature, non-fiction writing, just to name a few.

During the workshop, the children are encouraged to write to the best of their ability while utilizing the strategies taught in daily mini-lessons. For a kindergartener this eventually means, drawing detailed pictures, matching our words to our voice, stretching out our words and writing all of the sounds we hear, writing words from the word wall correctly, using mostly lower case letters, and writing more than one sentence to tell a story.
