The children will be participating in Writer's
Workshop this year. The ongoing structures within Writer's Workshop
provide a continuity of daily practice and coaching which allows writers to
practice and improve their skills. These structures include short lessons,
conferences, and partnerships. Units of study include narrative storytelling,
realistic fiction, nonfiction, poetry and persuasive writing. The
children are taught how to write with focus, detail, structure, clarity, and
interesting vocabulary. As the year progresses they will continue to develop in
their knowledge of the conventions of grammar and standard spelling. They
do this by planning, drafting, rereading, revising, and editing.
