Assistive Technology FAQ

1. What is Assistive Technology?

According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Assistive Technology refers to any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device (Authority 20 U.S.C. 1401(1)).

2.  What are some examples of Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology may be low-tech (e.g., pencil grips, special paper, etc.) or high-tech (e.g., augmentative communication devices).  Word processors, spell-check, and FM systems are common examples of Assistive Technology used in the school setting.

3.  How can I refer my child or student for consideration for Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology referrals are typically made by the child's IEP Team if it is determined that AT is needed for a child with a disability.

4.  What resources can I use with my child at home?
There are many resources embedded within tablets and computer and even smartphones that can help your child such as speech to text, and screen reading tools.

5. Who can I contact for more information?

Please contact your child's IEP teacher for specific student-related questions.  You may also contact Marissa Bonasia ([email protected]) or Michael Scholz ([email protected]) - Local Assistive Technology Specialists for further information.
