Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you for your input at the Budget Workshops. The Board has officially adopted the 2021-2022 school budget. Voting is on May 18, at Commack Middle School and Commack High School (see page 1). All of our pre-pandemic programs are budgeted for in the proposed 2021-2022 budget. With the reduction in spacing restrictions by New York State and the Suffolk Department of Health, we are planning for a return to full time classes for all students K-12 in September. Please continue to practice all the safety measures put in place to reduce the spread of the virus and its variants so this will become a reality and our thanks to all the parents who stepped up this year to help us with busing, scheduling, and PTA.

Thanks to the increase in aid from the American Rescue Plan and the federal stimulus, we are offering cost-free opportunities for our students over the summer months. This includes athletics, academics, music, technology, movement, crafts, and mental health counseling. We are also able to offer each child free lunch thanks to funding from a national school lunch program. Free lunches and breakfasts were also offered this school year to all students, K-12. Please keep in mind that the additional aid we receive must be spent according to the conditions specified. We have only a short time to spend the additional aid, and it must be spent on student enhancements.

Our goals as a Board is to support the development and on-going enhancement of a well-balanced, developmentally appropriate curriculum that allows all students to be prepared to accomplish their individual goals by providing them with the support they need to be successful and happy. During the budget-development process, the District’s administration once again used a multi-year, zero-based budgeting process. The Board continues to review and provide for the District’s financial stability over time, while balancing the financial goals with the expectations of the community. The Board works with the District administration to ensure that we are meeting these goals.

The proposed budget for the 2021-22 school year will result in a tax-levy increase of 0.99%, well under our State-mandated tax cap of 2.33%. We are #CommackProud of our students, who did very well this school year, receiving awards and accolades at the local, state, and national levels. Our dedicated staff and administration are determined to see that our students continue to thrive, despite the many obstacles we encountered this year. We look forward to year-end activities such as the moving-up ceremonies, prom, graduation and so appreciate all that everyone has done to keep the students en-gaged this year.

The Board thanks the entire community for its continued support of our school district, and hopes that you can continue to participate in the variety of community-based activities that occur throughout the year. Your vote is important! Please take the opportunity to vote this year on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.
