Receptive Language

Receptive Language is the understanding of the spoken or written message.  This includes comprehension of vocabulary, concepts, various sentence forms, and general oral information.

Receptive Vocabulary is the understanding of word meanings for nouns, verbs, and categories.

Linguistic Concepts is the comprehension of positional, spatial, sequential, and temporal concepts.

  1. Positional Concepts: inside/outside, top/bottom, up/down
  2. Spatial Concepts:  over/under, front/back, between, next to
  3. Sequential Concepts:  first, second, third, last, etc.
  4. Temporal Concepts: before/after, yesterday, today, tomorrow

Understanding Sentence Forms is the ability to interpret spoken sentences of increasing length and complexity.

Auditory Comprehension is the ability to answer questions based on the understanding of spoken information.

Expressive Language

Expressive Language is the ability to communciate one's perceptions, feelings, ideas, or intentions via the spoken word.  This includes the use of vocabulary and grammar combined to formulate a meaningful and well organized sentence.

Expressive Vocabulary is the use of vocabulary to label, describe, or compare objects, actions, and categories.  This includes nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Grammar is the use of morphology (word endings like "ing", "ed", etc.) and syntax (pronouns, copula/auxilary "is/are") to develop simple and complex sentences.

Organization of Thoughts is the ability to express your thoughts, comments, and ideas in an organized, sequential and logical manner.

Articulation & Phonology

 
Articulation is the production of speech sounds which involves the accuracy in placement of the tongue, lips, and teeth. 
 

Phonology is the relationship between sounds that when combined in a word create meaning.  These sounds are characterized by manner and place of production (ex. /m,p,b/ are in the same class).

The development of articulation skills are an ongoing process from birth to adolescence.  The earliest sounds developed are the /p,b,m/.  Later developing sounds include the "l, r, sh, ch, j, & th". 

Articulation and phonological remediation requires specific knowledge of sound production and oral motor movements.  If you have any concerns about your child's articulation or phonological development, please contact me.

Auditory Processing

Auditory Processing is the use of specific auditory skills such as sound blending and discrimination, auditory memory and/or auditory sequencing.

  1. Sound blending  is the act of listening to individual sounds and combining them to make sense of a word (ex. /c/ /a/ /t/= cat).
  2. Auditory discrimination  is the act of hearing differences between sounds in words
  3. (ex. cat/bat sound different, fun/fun sound the same).
  4. Auditory memory  is the act of recalling spoken information either in a single word, phrase or complete sentence.
  5. Auditory sequencing  is the act of organizing sounds, syllables, and words into the proper order.  Considered a fundamental auditory ability for understanding speech.

Fluency

Fluency is the smoothness with which sounds, syllables, words, and phrases are joined together during oral language.  The opposite of Fluency would be Stuttering

Stuttering is a communication disorder that interferes with a person's ability to speak fluently.  It involves the repetition, prolongation, or blockage of sounds, syllables, or words.  There is no one known cause of stuttering. 

Most children go through a period of "normal dysfluency" between the ages of two-four.  This is due to the development and organization of language at this critical time in their lives.  These dyfluencies could last up to six months and vary in severity.  However, if your child is stuttering for longer than three years, please feel free to consult with me.

Periodic assingments will be sent home to provide practice and reinforcement of therapy skills.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact me via phone or email.
