2. Replace the unknown word with a synonym.
3. Use context clues to help understand the word.
4. Read the words before and after the challenging
vocabulary word to try to figure out the meaning.
5. Read more to gain exposure to new words.
How To Help Your Child Decode
Challenging Words:
1. Look at the picture and think of words that make sense.
2. Say the beginning sounds and think of words with the same
sound that make sense.
3. Read the word in a sentence and see if it makes sense.
4. Try "tapping it out". (Wilson)
5. Read the word in a sentence and see if it makes sense.
6. Skip over the word and read on. Go back to see if you can
figure it out based on the context of the sentence.
