Mrs. McConnell

Commack High School

Special Services Department

Welcome to Resource Room. Your child will receive the supportive services necessary for a successful and productive academic year. These supportive services provide your child with individual learning strategies to organize and understand the material presented in the content area classes. One of our many goals for this year is to help each student to become more independent and responsible. I will provide the student with valuable study skills to enhance their ability to prioritize their time, organize content area materials, and master the skills necessary to succeed. This approach emphasizes each student’s strengths and provides tutoring, drill and practice, as well as compensatory activities to address their weaknesses that will ensure each student a successful academic year.

The following will provide you with information regarding daily procedures in the Learning Center:

1) Materials:                     All of my students are expected to come prepared each day with the necessary materials. These materials include their agendas, binders, notebook, folders, and any other materials that they may need to complete the daily activities.

2) Tests:                          Reviewing for tests and quizzes always takes precedence over any other work. The alternate testing room will be utilized as an alternative setting and for extended time allowances (Room 108). All tests/quizzes must be completed the day they are given!!

3) Extra Help:                  I am available for extra help every Thursday after school in Room 105. I request that the students let me know when/if they are coming so that I can plan accordingly. All content area teachers offer extra help at least one day per week. Your child should know which day of the week each department offers extra help and plan on going if they need specific assistance in the content area.

4) Homework:                   Homework plays a vital role in all classes. Our Special Services Department offers Homework Helpers, Monday through Friday, in the mornings from 6:45-7:25am in Room 108, and in the afternoon from 2:30-3:10pm in Room 238. We encourage your child to attend when possible.

5) Contact Information:     If there are any questions, I can be reached via email at  I will also be contacting you periodically regarding your child’s progress.

I look forward to a productive and successful academic year!
