Google vs. Online Databases

"Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one." - Neil Gaiman

Columbus State Library. “You Can’t Just Google.” Online video

Online Databases

  • Difficult to verify; unregulated.
  • Most are scholarly, peer-reviewed, trustworthy
  • Sometimes millions of hits; duplicates are not filtered out
  • Manageable number of "hits"; duplicates filtered out
  •  Limited search features
  • Search features determined by subject focus
  • Information can come from anyone with internet access; when coming from legitimate sources, user usually has to pay
  • Only deals with published information; library pays for access to information, free to you
