The children are working in Reader's Workshop this year. Every workshop begins with a minilesson, followed by independent reading time in their "just right" books and working within their partnerships. During this time the children are conferenced with both individually and with their partners. The children are also met with in guided reading groups and in strategy groups. These ongoing structures establish the conditions in which children learn to read. Teachers can assess what children can do, and then teach children to grow as readers.
