Our reading workshops are presented as units of study. We use mentor texts to introduce and model various reading strategies. These strategies are then applied by student readers during independent and small group reading instruction. Children will work at various reading levels ranging from A to Z that are determined by the classroom teacher or reading teacher. When choosing books for at-home reading, the Five Finger Rule below can help you decide if a text is "just-right."
The Five Finger Rule!
Choose a book and read the first page or two.
Put one finger up for every word you don’t know.
If five of your fingers go up while reading,
it’s too hard so choose another book.
If none of your fingers go up while reading,
it’s too easy so choose another book.
If only two or three fingers go up,
you’ve found a “JUST RIGHT BOOK!”
