Why is the Flag Flying at Half-Staff Today?

Flag Status Update

Flag Protocols for Memorial Day

Per Governor Hochul’s directive, flags on state buildings are being flown at half-staff in honor of the victims of the horrific shooting at Tops Supermarket in Buffalo until all of the victims are laid to rest.

Governor Hochul has updated this directive, ordering flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff until noon on Monday, May 30, to honor the victims of the Texas shooting. This directive coincides with national and state flag protocols for the Memorial Day observance.

Flags should remain at full-staff following Memorial Day.

Memorial Day Protocols for Monday, May 30

Flags to half-staff: Sunrise, Monday, May 30, 2022

Flags to full-staff: Noon, Monday, May 30, 2022

Please be advised that on Monday, May 30, 2022, flags are to be flown at half-staff until noon, and at top of staff for the rest of the day in observance of Memorial Day.

Please note that the POW-MIA flag is to be displayed over all state buildings and facilities from sunrise to sunset on Memorial Day. The POW-MIA flag should be displayed beneath the national flag if there is no third staff available.

For state buildings currently displaying the Ukrainian flag, the state will suspend the flying of the Ukrainian flag on Memorial Day and return to displaying it on Tuesday, May 31.

GOVERNOR HOCHUL DIRECTS FLAGS TO HALF-STAFF TO HONOR VICTIMS OF TOPS SUPERMARKET SHOOTING IN BUFFALO

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced flags on state buildings will be flown at half-staff on May 16 in honor of the victims of the horrific shooting at Tops Supermarket in Buffalo. Flags should be lowered to half-staff at sunrise on May 16 and should remain lowered until all of the victims are laid to rest.

"The violence we witnessed at the hands of this white supremacist is sickening, unacceptable and it must stop here," Governor Hochul said. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us, and we must confront white supremacy head on. My heart is with our neighbors in Buffalo, the victims and their families — their legacy will live on."
