Letter to Commack Middle School Parents/Guardians re: Covid-19 Case
(provided to all parents/guardians for informational purposes)
Let us start with, based on the recommendation from the Department of Health, we are pleased to share that the Commack Middle School can safely re-open on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, which is a “B-Day.”
However, at this time, the Health Department has indicated that only the students who were in the classroom with the positive case must quarantine for 14-days and can return to school on November 2, 2020. Commack Middle School will be contacting the parents/guardians of the affected students indicated above to communicate the Health Department requirement to remain at home. The Department of Health has indicated that they will also be contacting these families within 48-hours with the official quarantine order. Further, the school will share the necessary eLearning information for these students during their time at home.
No other student, including those who rode the bus with the positive case, or staff member, including the teachers of the positive case, is required to quarantine. According to the Health Department, quarantine is not necessary because:
- The students were not on the bus for a sufficient amount of time to require quarantine and the windows on the bus were open, students were wearing masks, and social distancing was enforced.
- No teacher/staff member was with the positive case for a sufficient amount of time to require an order to quarantine by the Department of Health.
If you have any questions about this or the processes followed by the DOH, please call 631-854-0000.
For your information, we thought it might be helpful to share the process we follow in coming to this point. Since being notified on Monday, October 19, 2020 of a student with a positive case of COVID-19 at Commack Middle School, the District has been in constant communication with the Suffolk County Department of Health. Further, we communicated with the parents of all students in the classroom and those that ride the same bus.
Today, October 20, 2020, we submitted a lengthy, but very necessary, Department of Health investigative report and forwarded the required information immediately to the department. The information in the report included, but was not limited to, the Commack instructional model in place at the school, transportation records, attendance records, elements of the Commack Model safety plan including size of classrooms, mask wearing protocols, social distancing protocols, and other health procedures and operational information. This data was reviewed by the Health Department’s panel of medical professionals and healthcare providers. As a result, said panel provided the recommendations above.
Please also know that in accordance with our health and safety protocols, all affected areas in our schools have been appropriately cleaned and disinfected. It is important to share that again the Department of Health has commended Commack on our OUTSTANDING health and safety protocols.
As a reminder, students and staff should remain vigilant with following Health Department recommendations such as wearing a face covering, social-distancing, hand washing, and with self-monitoring their own health. Please contact your child’s healthcare provider with any concerns or if any COVID-19 symptoms arise.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience while we work through these health-related issues. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact building administration or the school nurse.
