Receptive Language

Helpful Hints to Improve Receptive Language Skills at Home

   1.  When reading a book with your child, have them point to various nouns, verbs, and categories.  "I Spy" books are a great tool to develop this               skill.

   2.  Give your child two step household directions using spatial, sequential, positional, or temporal concepts (i.e. put your video games next to the           controller and your books in between your games).  Say both directions in the same statement.  Make sure they maintain eye contact and do             not begin until you have finished speaking.

   3.  If your child appears confused by listening to complex sentence structures, it's alright to modify and simplify your language.  Break one                      thought into 2-3 sentences using more basic vocabulary.

   4.  Ask your child "who , what, where, why, when" question about what they see and hear.
