Fluency

Helpful Hints to Improve Fluency at Home

1.  Model your speech with a slow and relaxed rate.  This is far more effective then telling your child to "slow down" or "try it again slowly".

2.  Reduce the number of questions you ask your child.  Children speak more freely if they are expressing their own ideas.

3.  Use facial expressions and other body language .  This will let your child know that you are listening to the message and not how they are saying        the message.

4.  Have all family members take turns talking and listening.  Children find it easier to talk when there are fewer interruptions and they have the             listener's attention.

5.  Convey that you accept your child as he/she is.  The most important thing you could do is to support your child whether he/she stutters or not.
