Helpful Hints to Improve Receptive Language Skills at Home

  • When reading a book with your child, have them point to various nouns, verbs, and categories.  I spy books are a great tool to develop this skill.
  • Give your child two house hold directions using spatial, sequential, positional, or temporal concepts (ex:     Say both directions in the same statement.  Make sure they maintain eye contact and do not begin until you have finished speaking.
  •  If your child appears confused by listening to complex sentence structures, it's alright to modify and simplify yourlanguage.  Break one thought into 2-3 sentences using more basic vocabulary.
  •  Ask your child "who , what, where, why, when" questions about what they see and hear.
