The Peaceful Playground

The “Peaceful Playground” is a new addition to our character education curriculum focusing on recess and lunchtime.  The program centers on educating our lunch aides with the support of our mental health staff.  Training occurs throughout the school year providing continued support, and refining skills needed to encourage social and emotional intelligence amongst our students.  Learning extends itself from the classroom to the playgrounds and cafeterias.  An essential characteristic of play is that’s fun, and having fun together is the foundation upon which friendships are built.  Our goal is to help provide opportunities for students to formulate caring, authentic, and rewarding friendships.

Developmentally, there are differences in children’s abilities to take the perspective of others, and the reasons why they may seek out friendships.  It is essential to know what the children are developmentally ready for.  This program was developed with these developmental expectations in mind, as well as designed to reinforce and model positive peer relations.  One of the key components of the program is providing the children with attention for positive social behaviors.  Punishment is a short-term solution and often does not lead to as significant a change as reinforcement in teaching and maintaining behavior.

Social and emotional learning begins with all of us; parents, teachers, support staff; and administrators.  The “Peaceful Playground” compliments our already existing focus on character education here at Rolling Hills.  We are committed to improving the recess experience and ensuring all students benefit from this important time of day.
