Don’t get worse: listen to your thirst

Nutrition and hydration are two important factors that help a successful student-athlete thrive on and off the field.

“Without proper nutrition, the body will not be able to function at its maximum level. [Additionally], proper hydration is necessary. Water helps transport proper nutrients around the body and helps cushion your joints,” said the school’s athletic trainer, Lynn McConnell.

Many athletes benefit from keeping track of diets or time to drink water. This will ensure that they will successfully follow their plan daily.

“You can make food journals or use one of the apps, like MyFitnessPal, to manage your diet and caloric intake,” said senior Allison S.

Along with staying on top of nutrition, athletes have to make sure that they eat the proper foods and drink the right amount of water before, after and during a game.

“Focus on complex carbohydrates, modern protein and low fat. The pre-game meal should be consumed three to four hours prior to the event. A small carbohydrate-based snack is appropriate after the pre-game meal, closer to the start of the event,” said Paul Yerde, assistant coach of the Adelphi University women’s soccer team.

Along with pre-game meals, all student-athletes should drink proper amounts of water to avoid dehydration.

“Athletes should usually drink between one half and one whole ounce of water for each pound of body weight per day. For an average 150 pound person, this will be between 75 and 150 ounces of water a day,” said McConnell.

Overall, athletes who have proper nutrition and hydrate daily will be more successful in their sport.

“I think everyone would improve their performance by changing to a healthy diet. I also think how you take care of your body now, when you are younger, will affect your health when you’re older,” said health teacher Catherine Bongo-Liselli.l
