Commack's Hunger Hero - A Lifesaver!

Commack School District’s food service general manager, Maureen Rice, experienced a stroke while working at Commack High School, and co-worker Rosalie Duffy’s actions saved her life.

Maureen is fine now, and sent the following story to apply for the “Tyson K-12 Hunger Hero” award for Rosalie. Rosalie was chosen as one of five people nationally to receive a $5,000 grant, gifts for the Whitson’s team, and a Hunger Heroes poster with her image as one of the faces of Tyson’s Hunger Hero characters.

Rosalie Duffy saved my life (Maureen Rice). I was having an issue. I was talking to Rosalie and out of nowhere I felt sick. I was in medical distress (I had a TIA Stoke) and she quickly jumped into action by calling the school nurse and 911, all awhile remaining calm. Roe grabbed her co-worker 's purse jumped in the car and followed the ambulance to the hospital where she stayed for six hours to make sure her friend (me) and fellow team member was being treated and remaining in stable condition until family had arrived. Rosalie contacted my husband and our Boss Christine Kunnmann. Without Rosalie Duffy this Whitsons team member would not be with us today. Heroes are people you see everyday, with big hearts and excellent judgement. I am emotional writing this because minutes matter when you are  having a stroke.”

We are immensely proud of Rosalie and thankful for her dedication, support, and bravery in the face of a medical emergency, especially since this happened after school when no one else was around. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
