Reading

The children are working in Reader's Workshop this year.  Every workshop begins with a short lesson. These lessons could be about reading strategies used to decode text, comprehension strategies, story elements or many other things.  Skills are modeled through read alouds and direct instruction to help children learn how to navigate new texts across many genres. This is  followed by independent reading time in their "just right" books and sometimes working within partnerships.  During this time the children are conferenced with both individually and with small guided reading groups based on similar needs. These ongoing structures establish the conditions in which children learn to read. Teachers can assess what children can do, and then teach children to grow as readers.
