Earth's Systems

Building a Bottle Ecosystem

5-ESS2-1:  Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.

Practices:   Develop and Use a Model
Core Idea:   Earth's major systems interact to affect Earth's surface material and processes.
Crosscutting Concept:   Systems and System Models

Your Task:
  1. Watch the video to help you design your very own ecosystem.
  2. Take pictures of your model before and after plant growth.
  3. Create a word document that includes the following:
    • Before and after picture
    • Paragraph that describes how the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere are interacting in your model.
    • Share this document with me when you are done.

Space Systems

5-PS2-1  Support an argument that diffences in the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their relative distances from the Earth.

Practices: Planning and carrying out an investigaton, analyzing and interpreting data, engaging in an argument from evidence, obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information.
Core Idea:   The sun is a star that appears larger and brighter than other stars because it is closer.  Stars range greatly in their distance from Earth.
Crosscutting Concept:   Patterns, Cause and Effect, Scale, Proportion, and Quantity

Your Task:
  1.  Find the constellation Orion by using the star chart provided.  You will find him in the southern sky.
  2. Locate Orion's shoulders and knee caps.  (Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Saiph, and Rigel).  Use the star map to help you.
  3. Draw a model of the Orion constellation.  Label Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Saiph, and Rigel.  Include the three stars the make up Orion's belt.
  4. Number each of the four labeled stars according to their brightness  (1 being the brightest and 4 being the dimmest) .
  5. Research the number of light years each star is from Earth and include this information on your drawing.   Take a second look at the Orion constellation and adjust your drawing if your interpretation has changed.
  6.  The star "Sirius" is closer to Earth than all the stars in the Orion constellation.  FInd it in the night sky and add it to your drawing to that I can use the Orion constellation to locate it in the night sky.
  7. Finally, answer this question in a complete sentence at the bottom of your drawing.

Which star is the closest to the Earth?

Share your final document with me.
