Commack Remembers

The Commack community gathered on Thursday to continue to fulfill a pledge to never forget.
At Commack High School’s 9/11 memorial park, superintendent Dr. Jordan Cox presided over the 24th annual ceremony remembering those who lost their lives on that day and in subsequent years.
Juliette and Darcie Scauso, daughters of 1973 Commack graduate and FDNY hazmat firefighter Dennis Scauso, offered a moving tribute to their father along with a message about the importance of continuing to support the families of victims.
Senator Mario Mattera, assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick and district attorney Ray Tierney also addressed those who came to pay tribute.
Fitzpatrick noted that, with 24 years having passed, a generation is now growing up who did not live through the tragedy. He spoke of the importance to pass down the history to those students.
Several speakers recalled the national unity that came in the aftermath of 9/11, and offered hope for that spirit of national solidarity to return.
The ceremony, spearheaded by district clerk Debbie Virga, included a wreath- and flower-laying ceremony as well as Alan Orloff ringing bells in memory of the victims, a moving rendition of Taps from Chris Toomey and moments of silence.
“We cannot erase their pain, but we can be sure they never carry it alone,” Dr. Cox said.
