Fifth graders began turning up at district-owned Marion Carll Farm on Wednesday to harvest turnips.

Tom Hand's class from Burr kicked off four weeks of harvesting by fifth-grade classes from both intermediate schools at the farm. 

After pulling up the turnips from the base, the students weighed their bounties in groups.

Students have the option of bringing home the turnips they picked to their families.

These turnips were planted in August, before school returned from summer break. But Hand's class also inspected the area where they planted turnips earlier this school year, and saw their turnips' sprouts coming out of the ground.
