The CHS boys fencing team won its first county title in four years and qualified for the Long Island Championship for the first time in program history with a 14-11 victory against Ward Melville on Thursday evening at Centereach High School.
Luca I. clinched the match with a victory at epee.
Afterward, he claimed the championship plaque from Commack girls fencing coach Jaclyn Sadiker, who was representing the county coaches association as its vice president.
The boys fencers will face the still-to-be determined Nassau County champion next Thursday at 5 p.m. at Hills East.
The county title comes in Tim Kunz’s first season as head coach.
The Cougars had entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed.
