Fourth Graders Choose Service Over Celebration

Mrs. Dick’s fourth grade class at Burr made a meaningful and compassionate decision this spring by choosing service over celebration. Rather than hosting a traditional class party, the students came together for a creative and charitable project, bringing in boxes of cereal and decorating them with bright, spring-themed designs.
All of the donated cereal was given to the Commack Sharing Table at the Suffolk Y JCC, a community-based pantry guided by the philosophy, “Take what you need, leave what you can.” With cereal currently in high demand, the students’ efforts directly supported families in need and made a tangible difference in their local community.
Mrs. Dick shared how incredibly proud she is of her students for their generosity, empathy, and sense of responsibility. Their decision reflects not only kindness, but also a deep understanding of what it means to give back. This project stands as a powerful example of young learners making a real and lasting impact.
