Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cox raised community concerns regarding heavy industrial truck traffic along Townline Road during Thursday evening's Board of Education meeting. The volume of commercial traffic near Burr and North Ridge has become a significant safety priority for families and district leaders alike.

Parents and local community organizations have expressed growing worries about potential dangers along the road, particularly during school arrival and dismissal times. Townline Road is a narrow two-lane street with limited shoulder space, which becomes even narrower during winter months when snowfall accumulates and creates unsafe conditions for student walkers.

Large industrial vehicles frequently share the road with school buses and passenger cars during peak travel hours, leading to hazardous congestion. Current town regulations limit commercial truck tonnage primarily to late night and early morning hours, leaving daytime school travel windows unprotected.

To address these ongoing challenges, Dr. Cox proposed drafting a formal letter to both the Town of Huntington and the Town of Smithtown to request a joint traffic and safety review. The district aims to collaborate with both municipalities to expand restricted hours for industrial trucks to align with school dropoff and pickup times.

The district hopes that the proposed request will also urge town officials to evaluate alternative commercial truck routes to reduce heavy traffic on Townline Road while balancing the needs of the surrounding neighborhood. District leaders hope that both towns will conduct a formal safety study to assess current roadway conditions and establish permanent traffic management solutions.
