Grade 5

Welcome to the fabulous fifth grade at John Mandracchia Sawmill Intermediate School! We know we will share some very special experiences this year. We are looking forward to all the learning that fifth grade has to offer.

As fifth graders, we learn a lot about geography and we study maps and atlases to prepare for the annual MSIS Geography Bee. As part of our study of the planets, we get to experience our very own STAR LAB. This giant igloo-shaped dome houses a small planetarium. Once we have crawled inside, we hear about Native American and Greek stories using the constellations.

Throughout the year, we read books and stories in many genres including fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, Greek mythology, myths, and poetry. We also learn how to write in some of these genres. We fall in love with many authors and learn to emulate them in our writing.

This year, all fifth graders will have the opportunity to work on laptops for ten weeks. We will explore all the available programs and use the computers to create projects related to our curriculum.

In May, the fifth graders take a three-day trip to Camp Mariah at the Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill, New York. At this camp, we learn about animal adaptations, aquatic and forest ecology, and geology. We study and discuss environmental issues, take hikes and learn outdoor skills including orienteering and wilderness survival. This trip takes months of planning and coordination by teachers and families, but the experience is one we will never forget.

Our year ends with Field Day and our Moving Up Ceremony. We have a special year in store for our fifth graders, and look forward to getting them prepared for their future endeavors at the Commack Middle School.
